RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Polish Naval Academy is a leading research and development center for the Polish Navy, defense and maritime industry. The research problems are selected so as to shape scientific specialties of the Academy in connection with programs of development of the Polish Navy as well as with the process of technical modernization of ships, weapons systems and equipment. The Academy has  unique research and development teams.

Several research projects conducted at the Polish Naval Academy are focused on modern maritime and defense technologies. State policies aimed at developing ties between science and industry encourage the Academy to establish close cooperation with industrial companies. The cooperation should yields good results in transferring advanced technologies to  industry. Such activities fortify the way to the most effective use economic and social potential of the Polish Naval Academy. The most important achievement in this area is the implementation of “Containerized Rescue and Hyperbaric Treatment Chamber System (Decompression Chamber)”. In execution of an order placed by the Polish Navy, Enterprise for Manufacturing of Refrigeration Equipment  PBUCH S.A. from Gdynia, in cooperation with the Polish Naval Academy is making a series of hyperbaric sets. Their production is based on the design worked out under the research project codenamed "Sercowka” carried out by Department of Underwater Work Technologies.

Expertise of the scientists of Polish Naval Academy deliver measurable benefits. New solutions have to be quickly implemented. It is possible only when cooperation between science and industry in efficient. The effective cooperation between the Academy and industry is stimulated by the mechanism, created by Ministry of Science and Higher Education, of jointly undertaken R&D efforts focused on further implementation of their results. It is only consortia composed of the representatives of those two groups that is able to be entrusted with such projects. The Academy together with other universities of technology and industrial companies actively participates in research efforts in support of defense and security.

Recently, as a result of R&D activity the Polish Naval Academy has recorded several practical achievements. They are as follows:

  • demonstrator of technology for signal analysis of selected cellular and satellite communication systems;
  • multidimensional integrated system for harbour monitoring and protection;
  • integrated system used to plan the perimetric monitoring and protection of harbours and critical facilities based on autonomous unmanned floating platforms;
  • methodology for underwater work in support of an off-shore oil-rig;
  • modernization of IDA apparatus designed for submarine crews;
  • participation in modernization of search and rescue ships;
  • development of mobile diving system (MOBNUR);
  • development of a monitoring system of atmosphere composition aboard submarines;
  • development of naval weapon systems, including underwater weapon systems;
  • development of unmanned underwater vehicles(UUV);
  • development of an electronic dedicated chart of Polish maritime areas to be used by maritime authorities to control vessel traffic;
  • signatures of commercial and naval vessels.

The Polish Naval Academy has also been awarded the following patents:

  • No. 369014 - single-layer coating that dampens and dissipates the waves;
  • No. 369375 - non-contact method used to identify technical condition of marine propulsion system;
  • No. 199054 - the method of obtaining a fuel-water emulsion for feeding self-ignition engines;·
  • No. 210665 - the device for performing dynamic tests properties of construction materials, especially metals, polymer and modified wood;     ·
  • No. 216906 - a device that monitors the composition of the atmosphere, especially in tightly sealed manned rooms;·
  • No. 219818 - the piston internal combustion engine with heat regeneration;·
  • No. 221079 - the device for measuring the orthogonal components of the machining force, especially during the turning;·
  • No. 223556 - the  electromagnetic wave propulsor, especially for propulsion the bionic underwater vehicles;
  • No. 216723 - the method of diagnosing the corrosive hazards of structures made of aluminum alloys and austenitic steel;
  • No. 68816 - three-layer impact protection with a core made of the cylindrical containers filled with liquid.

The equipment made for the armed forces requires the special defense and security-related (DS) certificates confirming that technical requirements are satisfied. There are only few establishments that are authorized to control and certify such products. In the whole country there are nine of them. The Laboratory of Fundamentals of Technology, Institute of Fundamentals of Machine Building, Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Polish Naval Academy received a DS accreditation covering taylored surfaces of submarines as well as armored and protective shields.

The Polish Naval Academy keeps the scientific cooperation with Polish and foreign research centers. It states the result of cooperation with European Space Agency and European Defense Agency. At present PNA is conducting research projects together with European Space Agency. One of them there is entitled "Formalized Model for Measurement Availability Assessment EGNOS with Defined Accuracy Level". As the research activities being done with European Defense Agency they are dedicated to signatures of commercial and naval vessels. The latest international project supported by the European Union in which the Polish Naval Academy takes part together with ten countries is entitled: "Chemical Ammunition - Search and Assessment”.

The achievements mentioned above are only few selected crucial examples of R&D projects carried out in the Polish Naval Academy.
