GREETING FROM THE YACHT KATHARSIS II

Written by

The Polish crew of the yacht Katharsis II, which one of a member is the 2nd Lt Ireneusz Kamiński, sends greetings to the academical community from the Cape Horn. Currently, the yacht sails in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula. The crew is already 60 days at sea and has 1/3 road left to finish the lap of the Antarctica sailing non stop below the 60O of the geographical width south. The challenge is special also because no one did it successfully so far.
The cruise begun on December the 23rd, 2017 from Cape Town in RPA, the target harbor is Australian Hobart, where the crew is expected to be at the beginning of April. During the cruise scientific research within the national program ARGO are being conducted.
Sailing throughout the coldest seas of the South Ocean well-known from very strong winds and powerful waves is dangerous also because of the various kinds of ice formations. Despite astral summer, the weather conditions require from the nine-person-crew very large physical and psychical effort. For the last few days the crew sails in a particularly difficult conditions, because nights are more and more dark, what makes quick navigation and looking out for ice obstacles extremely difficult.
